MEET THE COMMUNITY - S.B.O.A. GLOBAL SCHOOL REPORT
The Fire Station (fire-fighters) of Chennai, conducted an interactive session and
demonstration in SBOA School & Junior College at 10.00a.m on 08.11.2023 (Wednesday) for all
five S.B.O.A. Chennai School students of classes 7 & 8. Students were instructed to bring
notepads and also come prepared with some interesting questions to ask the firemen during
the interactive session.
Students learned how to extinguish fires, how to prevent fires, how to protect themselves and
others. The feedback from the students who attended the programme reveal the intense
impact the live demonstrations of the firemen had on the young impressionable minds. Here
are some of the feedbacks received from students of class 7 & 8 .
Students of STD VII and VIII
On the 8th of November 2023, we the students of Std VII and VIII went to a fascinating
programme of the brave fire-fighting world. There, we saw a wonderful demonstration of
skills, knowledge and the bravery of our brilliant Tamil Nadu firefighters. Here are 10 things
that caught my eye.
Their fire engine: A magnificent truck painted bold red which had proudly displayed ‘TAMIL NADU STATE FIRE BRIDGE’.
The number of students: A large gathering which was a delight to see; many students from
Junior College, Matriculation, Model and Global cheered in union.
Their explanation: They explained different types of extinguishers, different levels of fire and
the methods to control it were marvellous.
Here are some of the ways to control a fire:
The Starvation Method: Keep all the inflammable objects away from the fire to slowly deprive
it of fuel.
The Smouldering Method: Take a wet blanket/bedsheet or any object with a large surface
area and place it directly over the fire and smoulder it.Fire in the forest: Take lots of branches and beat the fire to cut off the oxygen supply.
They taught us –
• to handle oil fires?
• to safely handle fire crackers during Diwali?
• to use fire extinguishers?
On top of all these things, they taught us the fire emergency number, which is 112 or 101 and
their way to show with a live demonstration. A marvellous display of their water hose was a
show to the eye. I loved it. It was worth standing in the sun.
Thank you.

The firefighters awareness program was held on 18.11.2023, 9:45 AM to teach
students about fire safety, how to react to a fire and the job and working of fire fighters, and
the program did that just perfectly. Filled with many demos and a lesson/speech. Here are a
few of the things that we were taught :-
HOW TO PUT OUT A SMALL FIRE :
The easiest method is smothering. In it you ‘smother’ the fire with a wet/damp cloth like
gunny bag or a sack. This cuts off the supply of oxygen and extinguishes the fire.
Another way is throwing damp/wet sand on the fire forcefully.
Striking the fire with a branch with green leaves also works
By far the best is to use a fire extinguisher as it doesn’t damage the object on fire and
easily puts it out.
A QUESTION WITH SCENARIO WAS ASKED :
If there was a problem in the fuse box of a school and it short-circuited to cause a fire in a
classroom, what would you do as already a table has caught fire?
Many of us tried to find the answer. They were good ideas and we were taught the best way
called starvation of fire by separating the burning table from others, the fire is starved as it
has nothing to burn and will extinguish on its own after some time.
STOPPING A FOREST FIRE :
Forest fires are very dangerous and a threat to life. To stop it from spreading further, around
the perimeter trenches are dug so that the fire stops burning.
ASKING FOR HELP :
During a fire, immediately call the fire station while getting yourself to safety. The number to
call is 101 or 112 and help is on its way. Till the firefighters arrive drop down and crawl to the nearest exit.
THE FIREFIGHTING TRUCK/ENGINE :
The firefighting truck/engine has a ladder to rescue people and a long hose to put out the fire.
The water can reach the 4th and the 5th floor.

FIRE FIGHTERS
Fire Fighters are people who save the public from fire accidents.
1. In an emergency we must first call the Firefighters.
2. If it is a small fire, we can throw the sand forcefully.
3. If it is a little but larger fire, we have to use the fire extinguisher.
4. Let’s see how we can avoid an emergency of fire
● we should turn off the gas.
● We should not leave the fireplace burning.
● We should turn off everything before we go out.
5. We should also burst firecrackers safely.
6. We should burst fire crackers with adult supervision only.
7. If something catches fire, we have to use a thick blanket to put out the fire.
8. If you have any fire-related emergency, call 112 immediately.
9. Let’s celebrate the Diwali happy and safe!

The ‘FIRE FIGHTERS’ program was very informative. It also taught us how to tackle such
situations.
They taught us several methods to control or put out fire.
First method is to throw sand on the fire with force.
The next one was to cover the fire with a wet blanket. It cuts the oxygen supply.
The last method was to beat the fire with a bundle of leaf.
As ‘Diwali’ is approaching, they gave several tips and safety protocols while bursting crackers.
As they gave us real experience of how to put out fire, it was very helpful and we could
remember it lifelong.
The most exciting thing was when they showed us how fire extinguishing vehicles work.
They had burnt a small hut and put the fire out.
We had lots of fun, though it was sunny. We really appreciate their work. THANK YOU, SIRS.
