‘Addressing Behaviour Issues in Primary Children’ by Mrs. Anjana Pushparaj (Counselling Psychologist)

Objective:

The seminar aimed to provide insights and strategies for addressing behavioral issues in primary children through the lens of clinical child psychology, equipping educators and caregivers with effective tools to support the psychological well-being of young learners.

Introduction to Clinical Child Psychology:

The seminar commenced with an overview of clinical child psychology, emphasizing its role in understanding and addressing the psychological challenges faced by children. Participants gained insights into the developmental stages of childhood and the importance of early intervention in promoting healthy socio-emotional development.

Understanding Behavioral Issues in Primary Children:

A comprehensive analysis of common behavioral issues observed in primary children was presented, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), anxiety disorders and conduct disorders.  Participants learned about the underlying factors contributing to these issues, such as environmental stressors, trauma, and genetic predispositions.

Strategies for Intervention and Support:

Practical strategies and evidence-based interventions for addressing behavioral issues in primary children were discussed. Topics included behaviour modification techniques, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for children, social-emotional learning (SEL) programmes and creating supportive environments in homes and school.  Emphasis was placed on the importance of collaboration between educators, parents and mental health professionals in providing holistic support.

Conclusion:

The seminar on clinical child psychology provided participants with valuable insights and practical strategies for addressing behavioural issues in primary children.  By fostering a deeper understanding of childhood development and equipping caregivers with effective intervention tools, the seminar aimed to promote the psychological well-being and academic success of young learners.
